OSDC 2007 Call For Papers

The call for papers is now officially out for the Open Source Developers’ Conference 2007. This year is the first non-Melbourne year, with the event being managed by a new organisational committee in Brisbane!

So add the 26th - 29th of November to your diaries, and get your papers submitted by the 30th of June, and I’ll see you in Brisbane in 6 months!

BarCampMelbourne has two more sponsors!

University of Melbourne Gary was going to go and buy last minute items, such as paper, notepads, etc. when Sandrine called to tell me that Melbourne University’s Department of Information Systems are lending/giving us whatever stationary we need, so we now have butcher paper, notepads, tape, sticky putty for sticking paper to walls, and so forth.

Huge ObjectIn other news, we are now fully sponsored. With Andrew’s help, Huge Object have come in at the last minute and given us some cash, so we can now officially afford the venu and catering! Hooray and thanks!

Creative Contingencies sponsor BarCampMelbourne

Creative Contingencies Creative Contingencies are a Melbourne based micro-business dedicated to finding the right solution for each of our clients. They believe that Open Source Software solutions are often the answer they’ve been searching for.

Many thanks to Creative Contingencies for providing lanyards and badge holders!

Joint second BarCamp Sponsors

In joint second place for the race to sponsor BarCampMelbourne come two community organisations, Linux Australia and the Open Source Developers’ Club.

Linux Australia Linux Australia Inc. was founded to cater specifically to the needs of the Australian Linux community. Australia has unique problems that confront those attempting to organise and coordinate user groups and other support mechanisms because of its high urbanisation and large geographic distances between populated areas. Linux Australia hopes to assist in bringing the disparate pockets of Linux support into a single forum by encouraging and facilitating communication between these groups.

Under their Grants Scheme, Linux Australia has kindly sponsored all four BarCampAustralia venues!

OSDC The Open Source Developers’ Club runs meetings in Melbourne every other month, and an annual Conference, designed for developers, by developers, covering numerous programming languages across a range of operating systems with talks from introductory pieces through to the deeply technical.

Profits from conferences are used not only to prepare for future conferences, but also to support community events, such as BarCamps.

Thanks to all our sponsors!

BarCampMelbourne gets its first sponsor!

I know I haven’t written for a while, and I apologise (especially to my mother who is still waiting for news from our trip in Guatemala). I will get there!

Most recently, as well as settling back into a relatively new job, The BarCampMelbourne organisers have been working hard to find a venue and secure Internet access. These are both pretty much settled now, pending a few signatures.

The next step is to secure sponsorship so we can afford to actually run the event.

I’m really happy to say the Scott Davey of Datalink (a previous employer of mine) has agreed to sponsor the event. Thanks Scott!

DatalinkAs I’ve told friends, and mentioned on the BarCampMelbourne web site, Datalink are a great bunch of people who really know their stuff (an no, I’m not hyping it because they’re sending me some money!). Rarely have I been challenged so much in my day job and worked with people who consistently think out side the box to come up with their solutions. I take solace from the fact that I manage to go for a bike ride with Scott every now and then, and see him and his partner for dinner once in a blue moon…

Do you know anyone who might be interested in sponsoring BarCampMelbourne? For full details, check out the Sponsorship page and get in touch with me directly if you’re interested.
